Akari in New York

Daily Uniform: Alaïa shoes, white shirts.
I have a few: Alaïa shoes, YSL vintage.
In the kitchen, I swear by: My husband, Adrian, and a sharp knife.
The taste I couldn’t live without: Anything spicy, cilantro, soy sauce.
Favorite Recipe: A big pure salad of kale, arugula, radish, daikon, avocado, shredded carrot, red onion, cilantro, sesame seeds with spicy sesame healthy dressing. (No cheese, nuts or dried fruits!)
My favorite local restaurant I go to when I’m homesick: Omen in New York.
My first childhood food memory: For special occasions my family and I would go to a French restaurant called Neko (which means cat) which was owned by a Frenchman, very rare in Japan at the time. I always ordered the roasted baby lamb chops with red wine sauce and finished with the wild cassis sorbet.
If I could cook for anyone, it would be: My beloved grandmother in heaven. She was the absolute best at cooking traditional Japanese. It would have been so hard to cook for her, but maybe something American to show her “Hey, I’m married to an American guy!”

1. Cafe Cream at Cafe de Flore in Paris.
2. Traditional grilled eel and rice with dashi (fish-based broth) in Nagoya, Japan.
3. Korean cold noodle with spicy kimchi in Korea.
4. Pintxos with chilled white wine in San Sebastian, Spain.
5. Every and any plate at any trattoria in Rome.
