Top 5 Design Tips To Live By:
TIP 1: Only Buy What You LOVE
Not because it’s on sale. Or you need to fill a space. Be okay with an unfinished product in the name of the final outcome. You will waste money buying things twice if you don’t wait (and save) for what you really want.
TIP 2: Take Risks
Start in small spaces (powder rooms, guest rooms) but try something bold and out of character. Most likely it will end up being your favorite thing in your home. I have a 100% success rate with this, I swear!
TIP 3: Be Realistic
If you have dogs and kids a white sofa (or navy velvet) will NOT WORK. No matter how much bleach and/or lint brushes you have. Homes in magazines are not always real, you have to be honest with yourself about how you live or you will regret it.
TIP 4: Go Dark
Dramatic wall color in dark, moody shades may seem scary at first but it really can make a room special. Dark navy (specifically Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue) is my current obsession.
TIP 5: Be Okay With Change
We all grow and so do our tastes. What you loved 5 years ago (or 5 minutes ago) may not be what you love now. Your home, like yourself, is an ever evolving thing. Be okay with this and transition in new pieces to reflect your changing taste. This will make your home interesting and characteristically YOU, not a page out of a catalog!
