EARTH TU FACE
Founders: Sarah Buscho: Founder, Clinical Herbalist; Marina Storm – Operations Manager, Clinical Herbalist
“Intentionally choosing plants that heal, restore and rejuvenate skin cells.”
Where do you find the inspiration for your work?
It all comes back to nature for us. We love looking at how ecosystems work, specifically how solutions are created from what is available and the beauty and harmony happening there naturally.
Tell us about your making process.
Earth tu Face started small in our kitchen and garden in Northern California. We grow our medicinal plants, harvest, dry and infuse to oils. As herbalists, we wanted to create products that when absorbed into the skin will actually increase the health of our bodies in addition to producing great results.
How has your process changed since you started?
In the beginning, we handmade every single product in our kitchen. There is a portion of our line that is still handmade, but we have grown a lot. We found a locally-owned manufacturer in California that mixes our recipes and fills jars in small batches. The entire facility is certified organic and we still have 100% control over every aspect of what goes into the products. It’s been an amazing solution for the growing demands of Earth tu Face.
What is your favorite material to work with?
Our favorite materials to work with are essential oils and raw plant minerals, which include flowers, roots, and leaves. Also dirt! We love working in the garden, getting our hands in the dirt is the most fun and rewarding part of the process.
How does your personal style influence your brand, company, and products?
We are inspired by other small companies, artists, and designers, and feel it’s important to have a connection to where your clothes are coming from. Alexandra Cassaniti designs a collection, Summer Bummer, which is all designed and produced in Venice Beach, California. We are big fans of her work, as well as Gina DiGirolamo, an amazing Oakland, California-based designer that makes all of her collection by hand.
Where do you imagine you’ll take the company next?
Our focus is to continue to create healthy products and grow our line. We want to keep a small, seasonal group of handmade products straight from our garden to complement our core skincare collection.
As herbalists, we hope to branch into farm teas using hand-dried herbs from our gardens for health and healing. It’s important for us to connect our customers with our process in a real and tangible sense. For many events we bring fresh plant material and raw ingredients to show how pure our process is. It never fails to ignite magic in people. Our direction will be to continue to hold events and educate customers on pure health and wellness.
Who would be a dream collaborator?
We love collaborating with other artists, designers, and like-minded projects. Alexandra Cassaniti creatively composed all of our brand packaging, from our logo artwork to all packaging components (our packaging is recycled, reused, or compostable). Alexandra also designed a custom Summer Bummer travel bag for our product line.
California surfer and photographer Kassia Meador shot our look book in our garden in Northern California. Our launch was held in New York during the opening week of All Good Things, a new mercado-style market in Tribeca that focuses on “the best of sustainable, local, organic, and European imported foods.”
Earth tu Face has also been working with NYC florist Polux Fleuriste. They contributed all of the gorgeous herbs, plants, and flowers for our event and this shoot! We would love to continue to collaborate on multiple areas of our business. We have a few upcoming new projects ahead that will be exciting – and we’re open to many more.
What colors, patterns, and materials are you drawn to right now?
Compostable packaging! That way nothing is left behind. Also, packaging that is beautiful and useful so that it can be repurposed. We tried to accomplish that with the glass jars and bottles we chose for the collection. Oh, and flower and berry pigments for a lip tint.
How did you get started in this field?
We really started making products for ourselves free of toxins, safe, organic and 100% edible – made with actual food-grade ingredients (not just cosmetic grade, which is not as pure). We hadn’t found anything on the market like this and really believe you shouldn’t put anything on your skin that you can’t put in your mouth. So, we started making it ourselves! But, in a sense, it started way back for both of us. We both come from gardening families and have an innate love of plants and nature.
What’s one tip you would give to people getting into this business?
Don’t be afraid to let your heart guide your business decisions. Think about all aspects of what you want to create, where ingredients come from and how things are made. We can change the world for the better! It’s not always easy, but the rewards are infinitely greater when you really follow what you know in your heart to be right.
Who do you see as an innovator in this field?
Juniper Ridge is a company near us that makes ethically produced, amazingly pure products using native wild plants. Their approach is incredible; they have a deep respect for nature in the way they do business. We are huge fans.
Jessa Blades of Blades Natural Beauty is also doing things that no one else is. She is THE resource for finding the best natural make-up, deodorant, skin and beauty products that is truly natural AND gives great results. She is also an herbalist! We love and support both of these amazing innovators.
