Good Times with Madison Utendahl

Is it too early for a little rosé?

Every week we sit and down discuss, among many things, the guy we’d like to objectify, who’s beautiful home we’re going to poke around, and the girl we’d like to pre-game with–yes, there is a method behind our madness here at SS! And while some features are harder to come by than others, Madison Utendahl was an obvious choice. Beauty in bulk, brains to match, and enough energy to light up a small European village, Madison is what you would call a perfect Sous Style specimen. Since graduating college, Madison has moved back to her native New York and now works at Harvey Weinstein. We caught her half way through a script and a glass of rosé and after a little chit-chat, we watched her prep for a night out with her BFF.

OK, let’s start with our favorite question, what are you currently obsessed with? My dog, Soul Cycle (I know, I know), Kombucha, and any film by Steve McQueen (Hunger, Shame, 12 Years a Slave e.t.c)

Where are you off to tonight?
I’m meeting my friend Olivia for a drink at my local. Olivia and I met during our freshman year of college and have been close ever since. She’s like a sister to me and a daughter to my parents. She is truly a gem. I feel so lucky to have a such a loyal, loving, brilliant, and talented friend.

What’s your local?
Henry Public, it’s a great place to chill out with friends after work. There are few places in my neighborhood that give off such an amazing, relaxed vibe.

And in the world?
I don’t have one! It’s all about the evening itself.

What’s your makeup routine?
I wear very little makeup and stick to the basics. I believe a natural look is the most beautiful. I Mac Concealer NC42, Tarte Blush, Estee Lauder Mascara, Mac White Pencil Eye Liner, Benefit High Beam (OBSESSED).

How do you usually choose your outfit and accessories? Basically, how do you decide what and what not to wear?!
It depends entirely on my mood. I believe that one should always dress in the style and manner to which they are the most comfortable. I am a boots/jeans/T-shirt/jacket type of girl. I love anything by Alexander Wang and can most often be found wearing one of his T-shirts. I stand by the idea that a woman can be sexy and beautiful in casual attire; it’s all about how she wears it and carries herself. Whoever said that “sexy” is when a woman wears a tight-ass bandage dress with 7-inch stilettos (that she usually can’t walk in) is full of s*** and probably a man.

Preach. So what are we wearing tonight?
Black jeans and mossy suede boots from Madewell, a T By Alexander Wang mens T-shirt, a BLK DNM by Johan Lindeberg leather jacket, and jewelry by Genevieve Jones. I bought the shoes and jeans on a whim! It was after I realized I forgot to bring a change of clothes to the gym and had to go to a meeting immediately afterwards. I didn’t have time to go home to grab a set of clothes, so after my workout, I had to shower, put back on my workout gear (yuck) and then run to the nearest story to buy an outfit.

I looked like a chicken with it’s head chopped off. You would have thought I was about to miss my wedding! I was running around the Madewell store like a maniac. Everyone at the Soho store was incredible: They helped me put together an amazing outfit and we were all laughing the entire time. I’m in love with all of my purchases from that day, I wear them all the time. It turns out I had the wrong date for the meeting!

What do you put in your handbag when going out?
I’m Mary Poppins reincarnated. I have a plethora of random objects in my handbag, it’s crazy. Not quite sure how nor why I have managed to keep everything from an umbrella to a pair of flats in my purse.

Well, thanks for opening this bottle of rosé. What do you usually pre-game with?
Wine, always.

And when you were in college?
Honestly wine! Its my drink of choice and always has been. I was “that girl” who walked around carrying a bottle of red or rosé.

And your pre-game playlist?
Again it depends on my mood! It varies from Al Green, Van Morrison, to The XX.

What’s the one song you need to hear tonight? “Something Goes Right” by SBTRKT

OK, finish these sentences: On a Friday night we’ll usually find you: With friends or family at dinner

Your ultimate night out involves: Dinner with great wine and a fantastic party with great friends.

Favorite party scene in a movie or TV show: Christopher Plummer going to his first gay night club in Mike Mills’ Beginners.

A great night out with my girlfriends is all about: Great wine and good music. It sets the mood for the entire night! There’s nothing better.
