@Yoga_Girl in the Greek Islands
Yoga babe of the world, Rachel Brathen, shows us how she do in the AM
When we first reached out to Rachel Brathen, aka @yoga_girl, she was somewhere between Bonaire and Aruba, then Europe, and when we finally pinned her down for this Wake Up Call she was (casually) hanging out in the Greek Islands. So we thought, hey, this is as good of a place to shoot than any other, so Rachel ever-so-kindly made it happen. So why did we Skype-stalk her to such lengths? Take a look at her Insta, gurl. She is living the Vinyasa, SUP Yoga (Stand-Up Paddleboard Yoga) dream: leading workshops and hand-standing all over the damn world! Sit idly on her homepage for a second: oh hey there’s Rachel hand-standing above the clouds; oh, there she is in front of a waterfall; on a paddleboard in the middle of a turquoise bay; underneath a rainbow… catch our crush? Her life is so beyond Eat-Pray-Love-idyllic that you’d be forgiven for rolling your eyes but honestly, Rachel is so sweet and down-to-earth that you cannot be mad! Follow her routine below and enjoy this mini desktop vacation.
7.30 a.m. I wake up and decide I deserve to sleep in (I always deserve to sleep in when I’m off!) so I go back to sleep.
8 a.m. Ringo, our Italian Greyhound, who always sleeps under the covers with us, wakes up and starts licking my face, letting me know that I’ve slept enough.
8.04 a.m. I hug Ringo and he goes back to sleep (works every time!).
8.45 a.m. We all finally wake up: me, my husband Dennis, and one by one, the other dogs do too (we have four).
9 a.m. I drink a huge cup of hot water with fresh lemon juice. I do this every morning right when I wake up—it’s a great way to start the day!
9.15 .a.m I hit the yoga mat. I practice yoga every day, usually in the mornings. My practice differs daily depending on how I’m feeling, where I am, and how much time I have. Usually I do a few rounds of sun salutations and then focus on the parts of my body that feel stiff or sore; usually hamstrings, hips, and shoulders. Some days I practice for a solid 90 minutes, sweating, and moving a whole lot, other days I take 30 min just to stretch and breathe. Today I’m taking 45 minutes to stretch, move and get some core work in, too. I end my practice with a 10 minute meditation.
10.30 a.m. Breakfast. I love breakfast. It’s my absolute favorite meal of the day! I usually eat a ton of fruits, gluten-free toast with veggies (avocado, tomatoes), maybe granola, and lots of tea. I like coffee but never drink it in the morning.
11.30 a.m. Dennis and I go for a hike. No one is around so I decide to hike in bikini bottoms and sneakers, something I regretted immediately as we found ourselves hiking through cacti and some serious bushes… but it feels good to sweat!
1.30 p.m. Cool off in the ocean. I’m in the ocean at some point, pretty much every day. I need the sea to stay balanced. It’s instant meditation!
2.30 p.m. I open my computer and do some work
