Head Over Heels for Lucas

Handstands, girl talk & quinoa... we love our job...

One of the things we love most about our Male Monday, Cook for Me, Room Anatomies, and Wake Up Call features is that we’re invited into peoples’ homes—we just love seeing how people set their ish up. Today’s MM, Lucas McGowen, has one of the more labyrinthine spaces we’ve come across. Formerly a factory, Lucas’ home is the result of a lot of DIY and general man-smarts. Through one door is his office for Avenue D a film production company he runs with friends and through that cupboard door over there? Well, that’s his bathtub. In one corner stands a mini jungle of rescued and well-loved plants and in the other, an old barbershop chair. Needless to say, it was a lot of fun to poke around while he cooked us his signature quinoa and “shitaky” (see photo) mushroom salad melange. We chatted about New York waves, stick-and-poke tattoos, and the lingering affects of Her, alongwith everything else below.

Age: 26

Star Sign: Scorpio

Santa Barbara, CA, Woodstock, NY, Monteverde, Costa Rica, and  Brooklyn, NY

Sprit animal: Half fox, half crow

Day job: Filmmaker, director, cinematographer

And what are you currently obsessed with?

The universe, people antennae, destiny, telepathy, the machine, facilitation, self-love, and respect

Current projects?

I’m always working on a few different things. Film projects are like the cosmos, things are always lining up and coalescing at their own speeds, sometimes really fast and other times really slow, so it’s all about riding the wave.

So what’s your dream job?

Filmmaker, director, cinematographer

I guess congratulations is in order then! Name five things every man should own:
Rather then ownership I prefer to think of us as shepherds of the people and things that come into our lives. Five things I think every man should be lucky enough to shepherd: a bicycle, an audio recording of “A Conversation with Henry Miller,” a copy of the SAS Survival Handbook (How to survive in the wild, in any climate, on land or at sea) by John “Lofty” Wiseman, a backpack, and a good pair of boots.

Girl talk: Who was your first celeb crush? Natalie Portman

Do you have a type?
Bright-eyed, sparkle-eyed—special eyes, I guess. The eyes are the windows to the soul

You meet a cute girl at a party, now what? Look and smile

You just got dumped and the world is caving in. How do you pull through?
Friends, exercise, good food, and enough sleep

So we just opened a cupboard and found a bathtub.
Yeah. The first month I lived here while I was building everything I was basically living in a wood shop: I had a table saw set up and bunch of other tools. There was sawdust in my cereal, my underwear, my wallet—yeah, pretty much just lots of sawdust! My favorite thing about the space is actually the empty space in the middle of the room. That’s where the dancing happens.

Of all the places you’ve lived, which has the best food?
Probably Costa Rica, even though it’s a very simple food program: The meat and the vegetables where always fresh. Food is good when it’s local.

Dish and drink you make to impress a girl:
Quinoa and mushrooms with an arugala and avocado salad

In the kitchen you swear by:
Butter, garlic, salt, chives, basil, coconut oil, chili oil, and foods that are alive

Taste you couldn’t live without and why: Spicy. I love to sweat.
